How Working Memory Works

Today, instead of a blog, an infographic about how working memory works.

Here are some of the most important facts to remember:

1

The brain is ready to learn when we are curious. The desire for knowledge is the first and most important factor that determines how successfully things will be remembered.

2

The brain can use data from long-term memory once the neural pathways are in place. Paths are built when we try to retrieve the information. This is why (self) asking and quizzing is much more effective when studying than re-reading the material.

3

Working memory is limited. It is therefore important to automate some of the knowledge. This puts less strain on our “brain processor” and leaves more capacity for understanding, reasoning, and cerating connections.

4

We have two “guard dogs” in the brain – the Amygdalas. When in danger, the guards turn off the thinking part of the brain and make sure we act instinctively. Therefore, a child who is scared or stressed cannot learn, even if he really wants to.

And the conclusion?

Even neuroscience confirms that positive attitude and goo humour are essential for successful learning 🙂
